Cardiology
Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center's cardiovascular services are not only the best and most comprehensive in Nevada, but are among the finest in the nation. In fact, our interventional cardiology service was named a 1999 national award winner in 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Hospitals, a study by HCIA, a healthcare information company. To qualify for their award, a hospital had to show consistently good performance across six measures that indicate high-quality outcomes and efficient management of care. The clinical criteria included risk-adjusted mortality and complications, as well as number of procedures performed. The results of the study placed Sunrise among the best cardiovascular hospitals in the country.

Center for Chest Pain
Any time chest pain is experienced, the most precious resource of all is time. Our Center for Chest Pain, located adjacent to the emergency room, enables patients to be examined immediately by a staff focused exclusively on chest pain. Every procedure in the center is designed to streamline the process of diagnosis and treatment, giving every patient the best and most efficient use of the most precious commodity: time.

First, other possible causes of chest pain, including anxiety, muscle strain, ulcers, gall bladder disease or illnesses are ruled out. Patients experiencing heart-related chest pain receive a bed immediately, and oxygen, electrocardiogram and lab work are performed bedside. Patients who display symptoms of a heart attack are admitted for treatment and monitored in a closed setting for at least 18 hours. The center offers education programs to both patients and emergency medical systems personnel.

Cardiology Department
Cardiology services include inpatient and outpatient electrocardiograms, stress testing, tilt-table testing, cardiac imaging (including transesophagael echocardiograms), a 130-bed telemetry unit with state-of-the-art Hewlett-Packard monitoring equipment, and a cardiac rehabilitation program. The cardiac catheterization laboratories provide the capability to perform the latest in diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Coronary Care I
This service unit specializes in the intracoronary thrombolytic and stent patients. It provides the highest standard of care to patients requiring invasive complex cardiac procedures.

Cardiovascular Intermediate Care Unit
The Cardiovascular Intermediate Care Unit is a 37-bed progressive care unit for the pre- and post-operative monitoring of cardiovascular patients.

Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit
This special unit is responsible for the post-operative care of coronary bypass patients. Rapid recovery and getting patients back on their feet as soon as physically possible is stressed.

Childbirth Education
Having a baby is a normal natural process but, nevertheless, a challenging experience both physically and emotionally. Like any event in life, preparation is the key element to a successful outcome. It removes the mystery and helps alleviate the fear that comes with giving birth. Regardless of individual preferences concerning medication or anesthesia, such preparation enables each mom, her coach, her obstetrician, and the labor room nurses to function as a team. This team's goal is delivering a healthy baby to a healthy mother through a positive birth experience. Let the Center for Healthy Families be a part of this special event by taking our Childbirth Preparation course.

For those parents interested in Breastfeeding our center also offers a class with topics including early attachment, problem solving, and breastfeeding in public.

Our Sibling Class is a one-time informal class that prepares children for a new brother or sister. A parent, guardian or other adult is required to attend the class with their child. (Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center only) (ages 5 - 12).

For your convenience we offer multiple locations such as Sunrise (Central), Northwest & Southern Hills (Southwest) with both day and evening classes.

Fetal Assessment Center
The Sunrise Fetal Assessment Center was the first comprehensive fetal surveillance testing center in Las Vegas and is located on the first floor of the Women's Pavillion of Sunrise Hospital. Your physician may refer you to our Center for a variety of conditions, including fetal (growth/movement/postdates/preterm labor/multiple gestations) and maternal (diabetes, high blood pressure, advance maternal age).

The testing performed at the Fetal Assessment Center includes the five following tests, which will last 45-90 minutes.

1. Fetal Heart Monitoring
2. Amniotic Fluid Index
3. Biophysical Profile
4. Doppler Evaluation
5. Movement Chart

The Fetal Heart Monitor: This test allows us to hear, record, and evaluate the fetal heart rate.
Amniotic Fluid Index: This index measures amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus with an ultrasound machine. Amniotic fluid is largely fetal urine and reflects the blood flow to the fetal kidneys.
Biophysical profile: This allows us to further evaluate the fetus by observing fetal breathing movements, fetal body or limb movements and fetal limb extension returning to flexion with an ultrasound machine.
Doppler evaluation: This procedure allows us to record the blood flow through the umbilical cord artery using ultrasonography. This gives your physician information about how hard the fetal heart is working to push blood to the placenta.
Movement Chart: This is where you come in! You will be asked to monitor and record your baby's movement each day. A healthy baby will move each day. By combining these tests, your physician can have the information to plan needed to plan the safest time for delivery of your baby.

Most insurance companies cover the cost of the fetal assessment testing. If you have questions, please contact your insurance directly or our Center at 702-731-8955.

Food & Nutrition
Admit it. The words "hospital food" don't exactly invoke images of fine dining and gourmet taste.

The Food and Nutrition Department provides high quality food, nutrition and customer service to patients, outpatients, physicians, employees and our guests. The range and scope of our services include patient food service, cafeteria service, catering, nutrition counseling/education, outpatient counseling and nutrition classes.

The food at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, however, defies that tradition. Brad Wild, our director of Food, Nutrition and Environmental Services, along with a staff of nearly 300, are committed to providing all patients with meals that are consistently tasty and nutritious. Even low-sodium, low-fat dishes, which often translated into low-taste and low-enjoyment, are now appealing and fulfilling. Today, the 4,300 meals we serve each day are much like those found in first-class restaurants.

We are proud of our hard-earned reputation of offering numerous made-to-order items and varied menus - available even to those with strict dietary guidelines. Employees also perform quality checks of patient trays to ensure that meals are the proper temperature and of high quality.

Gamma Knife® Center
Imagine having a brain surgery today and returning to work in a few days. No pain, no incision or incision or scarring, no recovery time. Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, in another "medical first," will unveil Nevada's Gamma Knife - a revolutionary new tool that destroys brain tumors.

The latest advance in laser technology, the Gamma Knife promises to save lives and gives new hope to patients of all ages with operable and inoperable brain tumors as well as blood vessels abnormalities.

The Gamma Knife is a 3.5 million, 20-ton tool that performs stereotactic radiosurgery using a concentrated cobalt radiation dose delivered with precision to destroy abnormal tissue. The tool, housed in a 2,000 square-foot addition to the sunrise Diagnostic Center, uses three computers, 201 beams of intersecting radiation and requires the skills of a multi-disciplinary team, including a neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist and a radiation physicist.

"Access to this extraordinary technique, allows patients to stay in Nevada and surgery to be performed on critical locations of the brain without surgical risk or a long hospital stay.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - Levels II & III
Before 1974, there was no facility in Nevada to provide care to high-risk newborns. At that time, the state's infant mortality rate stood at 14 per 1,000 births - a number that was unacceptably high. In that year, Sunrise opened the state's first neonatal intensive unit, the 44-bed Regional Neonatal Unit III. Since it's opening, the unit has treated more than 20,000 infants, and Nevada's infant mortality rate is now among the lowest in the country. To fully appreciate the impact we've had, consider the following numbers: 88% of the infants bought to our unit are able to leave. The national average is 69%. Babies cared for in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit also experience 8 % less eye damage and are able to breathe without assistance 24 percent more quickly than in other similar units. Since it's opening, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit III has treated thousands of high-risk infants from Nevada to surrounding states- setting a lofty standard in successful high-risk infant care.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit II
Sunrise is the only hospital in Nevada to offer separate Level II and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Our level II unit, opened in 1997, provides the same highly skilled neonatal nurses and specialized care required for high-risk sick and premature infants. The only difference between our Unit II and Unit III is that Unit II patients do not require the intensity of medical care given those in Unit III, and is a warm family centered environment.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a multidisciplinary unit that provides care for infants, children and adolescents who are injured or become critically ill. Conditions that might bring your child to the PICU include severe infections, poisoning, drug overdose, trauma, extensive and complex surgery, congenital anomalies, immunological disorders and oncological emergencies. The PICU is the only unit in the state that provides extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ECMO is a life-saving technique that mimics the natural function of the heart and lungs, allowing an infant or child to rest while natural healing of the affected organs takes place. It is used for newborns and children suffering respiratory and/or cardiac failure as a result of birth defects, trauma or severe infection. The many physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals who work in the PICU possess the skills and knowledge to provide timely and appropriate assessment and treatment and thereby achieve the best possible outcome from an injury or critical illness. Utilizing advanced technology, our healthcare team improve survival, speed recovery and minimize pain and suffering from illness and injury in a humane and respectful manner. The technology used in the PICU is at the forefront of Intensive Care.

Parents are encouraged to participate in the care of their child, as desired, while in the PICU and a parent is allowed to sleep at the child's bedside. The new PICU, opening in November of 2005, has a family lounge that includes kitchen facilities, showers, lockers and nearby laundry facilities.

Admissions to the PICU are coordinated and overseen by a Pediatric Intensivist who is available in the PICU 24 hours a day.

Pharmacy
The Department of Pharmacy Services provides twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week patient-centered pharmaceutical care for the adult, pediatric and neonatal patients at the Sunrise Hospital and Sunrise Children's Hospital. A team of clinical pharmacists and competently trained technicians deliver services from the Central Pharmacy, the Cardiac ICU Satellite, the interim Pediatric Satellite, Surgical Satellite and ICU Satellite. Services to adult Med-Surg, Oncology, Respiratory and Rehab units are provided by Unit-based Pharmacists.

Unit dose medication distribution is fully automated utilizing the McKesson Robot-Rx™. Approximately 10,000 units dose and 800 compounded IV medications are dispensed daily. An onsite packaging service repackages medications in unit dose format with an NDC barcode to support the barcode scanning patient safety initiative.

The use of automation technologies and electronic patient information facilitate the ability of the pharmacists to manage the patients' drug therapy efficiently and effectively. Pharmacists make contacts to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals to recommend drug therapy changes to maximize patient outcomes. Clinical Interventions are tracked using the CliniTrend™ software program. The number of Clinical Interventions documented by pharmacists has more than doubled in 2004 over the previous year.

VISION:
To be the Premier Provider of Pharmaceutical Care in the Southwest.

MISSION:
To foster and promote a collegial practice environment designed to embrace and advance pharmaceutical care. The department will be comprised of highly motivated, knowledgeable, experienced individuals who are capable of working effectively within the framework of an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals. Leadership in teaching, service commitment, and the pursuit of scholarly activities will serve as a central theme. Technology will complement innovation and create exciting new practice opportunities intended to provide the highest level of patient care and improve patient outcomes.

Sunrise Hospital is dedicated to utilizing the latest technologies to enhance patient care and safety. The Department of Pharmacy incorporates many automated processes in its daily operation.

The hospital was the first in Las Vegas to implement a pharmacy robot. The McKesson Robot-Rx™
dispenses twenty-four hour supplies of unit-dose medications in envelopes. Medications are delivered and stored in Nurse Server cabinets located in each patient's room. The inventory of controlled substances is maintained by Narc Station™, an electronic narcotic storage and dispensing system.

MedDirect™, an optical medication order scanning system was implemented in March of 2004. The system transmits an electronic image of the physician's order to the pharmacist's computer workstation screen. It enhances the staff's ability to access physician orders regardless of service location and facilitates order processing in a timely manner. The increase in operational efficiency enables the pharmacists to devote more time to perform clinical activities.

AcuDose™, a unit-based medication storage and dispensing cabinet system, is deployed on all nursing units and procedural areas. The system provides quick access of unit-dose and IV medications by nurses once an order is processed on the pharmacy computer system.

Technology is the answer to ensure patient safety and improve efficiency in TPN admixture service. The pharmacy utilizes the BAXA compounder, a computerized TPN formulator to aseptically prepare TPN solutions for an average of fifty patients daily. The Department of Pharmacy Services was one of the first facilities nationwide to trial the new Baxa Abacus™ multi-site TPN order entry software program.

Wound Care Program/Hyperbaric Chamber
Before the opening of Sunrise Wound Care Center in 1998, patients in southern Nevada had to travel out of state for effective treatment of severe or chronic wounds. The Wound Center now provides those services within southern Nevada. It is southern Nevada's most comprehensive wound care center, and one of first such programs in the state to utilize monoplace hyperbaric oxygen chambers for therapy in the treatment of wounds.

Comprehensive Wound Care Program
This major addition to the Sunrise healthcare facilities offers a variety of services including treatment for severe wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning, crush injuries, radiation injury, damage to vessels and extremities, certain ulcers and acute wounds that simply will not heal. In addition, smaller procedures such as small skin grafts and biopsies that don't require general anesthesia can also be performed. Our patients may take advantage of dressing changes, wound cultures, wound cleansing, Wound Vac application and wound care medications.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Two separate hyperbaric oxygen chambers (large pressurized tubes that encapsulate the entire body) are utilized to heal patients faster by delivering pure oxygen under pressure. Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitoring is available to enable the physician to measure how much oxygen the wound is receiving. The average treatment time is 90 minutes, and, depending upon the wound, it takes approximately 20-40 treatments for it to heal. This hyperbaric chamber procedure can prevent and/or relieve amputation, disability and pain. During treatment, the technologist, who has been certified by the NBDHMT and the hyperbaric trained physician are present the entire treatment period. Patients may also watch television, videos, listen to music or sleep during the treatment.
